Confined Space Training:

IKAR_1
Phoenix Surveying & Safety Equipment are pleased to introduce Matrix Vocational who are approved to offer the City & Guilds 6150 Working in Confined Spaces qualification through its specialist training facilities and fully qualified trainer assessors.

'No person shall work in a confined space unless they have been adequately trained, assessed and certificated for the purpose’

In today’s competitive market, proving the competency of a workforce is crucial for many reasons:

- A requirement for pre-tendering
- Compliance with ISO Quality systems and processes
- Compliance with company Risk Assessments
- Compliance with Health & Safety Legislation
- Compliance with Client requirements

National Occupational Standards (NOS’s) have been agreed and set for all major occupations and if achieved, demonstrate an individuals competency to a nationally agreed standard.  These are used by Industry Lead Bodies (ILB’s) such as Energy and Utility Skills, in conjunction with Trade bodies such as Water UK, to devise training and assessment programmes. Such programmes are then offered by Nationally recognised Awarding Bodies such as City & Guilds.  These, in turn, give successful candidates certificates of competence which are recognised nationally.

Course Details

Courses are held at Matrix Vocational's specialist facilities based in Bristol, UK.  The requirements for the training and assessment modules have been designed with an emphasis on a ‘Risk Base Approach’ to Confined Space Entry.

There are three risk levels: Low, Medium and High.  Below are the broad definitions and characteristics of risk.

Low Risk
- Easy/simple unobstructed and shallow entry/exit with natural ventilation
- No alarm from Gas Monitor prior to entering
- No likely risk of flooding

Medium Risk
- Has Access issues, a realistic expectation of encountering or possible introduction of a specified risk
- Work might involve a team entry. working away from the point of entry, the need for operatives to wear escape B.A. and working without an attached rescue line

High Risk
- Operatives are expected to carry out their work where there is a specified Hazard which cannot be controlled or eliminated.  In addition, there may be access issues and exits are triggered when pre-arranged safety margins are breached.  Operatives will enter these spaces with Self Contained Open Circuit B.A (SCOC) and wear it throughout the operation.

Certificates are achieved when candidates demonstrate competency against the appropriate National Occupational Standard of the following Units.

001 - Working in Low Risk Confined Spaces - Level 2
002 - Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces - Level 2
003 - Working in High Risk Confined Spaces - Level 2
004 - Overseeing work in Confined Spaces - Level 2
005 - Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties - Level 3

Each programme consists of a training element and assessment module. These vary in length according to the Unit chosen.
