Cable Avoidance Training:

Cable strikes result in death, injury and disruption. In line with HSG47 recommendations for safe digging practise you are responsible for taking steps towards minimising the risks on-site.
Phoenix Surveying Equipment Ltd are now offering a comprehensive training course aimed at offering you and your employees cost effective cable avoidance training with certification.
Phoenix understand today's hard pressed ground working contractor has the problem of needing to get the job done fast without breaking through pipes or cables. Now we are on hand to help you maintain the safest working conditions without breaking the bank.
OUR AIM
To ensure candidates understand the need to use location equipment and to teach them to operate the C.Scope range of pipe and cable locators in an accurate and safe manner.
DURATION
Typically a course lasts for 3 to 4 hours.
CANDIDATES
Up to 10 candidates can be trained in a single course.
VENUE
Normally the training course will take place at the customer's address. No special facilities are needed apart from a suitable room to allow the theory to be covered without disturbance. Access to an area where there are buried services is also required. Training can also be held at our facilities.
COMPLETION
Upon completion of the course the names of the successful candidates will be recorded to allow certificates to be provided.
CONTENT
The course consists of theoretical and practical training involving hands on use of the actual locators to detect and trace the route of buried services. The actual agenda is summarised below:
INTRODUCTION
This will cover the different types of buried services that exist, current legislation concerning detecting buried services, the safety implications of not using a locator plus ancillary locating work to be done (use of cable plans, observation of street furniture etc.)
THEORY: A general overview of how locators work followed by a step by step explanation of exactly what can and cannot be detected on the different modes. Typically use of the Cable Avoidance Tool alone is covered first followed by use of a Signal Generator. Accessories that are appropriate to the work that the candidates carry out will be included. Correct maintenance and care of the equipment is also discussed.
PRACTICAL
Candidates are shown the correct way to handle and operate the equipment on all modes before being given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience themselves. Any bad habits will be quickly picked up and corrected. Time is spent practising the techniques of detecting signals, pinpointing their source and then finally tracing the route of the service. A Signal Generator and the relevant accessories will also be used.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
C.Scope trainers are all experienced in using locators in a diverse range of situations over many years and bring this experience with them to the training course. We always seek to make our courses specific to the type of work that the candidates are involved with and encourage candidates to participation in discussion on the subject of locating throughout the course. The training is carried out in a friendly, relaxed manner and the theoretical content is covered in simple, easy to understand terms.
*Saturday and Sunday courses available at the discretion of the trainer and may incur travelling and accommodation charges.
